Heat Pump Repair Questions Answered
Common questions about heat pump repair from homeowners throughout Central Ontario.
Why is my heat pump icing up in winter?
Some frost on the outdoor unit is normal in winter—the defrost cycle handles this. Excessive ice indicates a problem: faulty defrost controls, low refrigerant, restricted airflow, or other issues. Continued operation with heavy ice can damage the system.
Can you repair all heat pump brands?
Yes, we service all major brands including Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, and more. We're trained on both ducted central heat pumps and ductless mini-split systems.
Why isn't my heat pump heating well in cold weather?
If it's an older or non-cold-climate model, it may lose efficiency below -10°C. This is normal for standard heat pumps. Cold climate models perform better. Other causes include low refrigerant, airflow problems, or component failures. We can diagnose whether repair or upgrade makes sense.
My heat pump runs constantly. Is that normal?
Heat pumps run longer cycles than furnaces—this can be normal, especially in very cold or very hot weather. However, if it runs non-stop without reaching temperature, there's likely a problem with sizing, refrigerant, or other components.
Why is my auxiliary heat running so much?
Auxiliary (backup) heat should only run during extreme cold or defrost cycles. If it runs frequently, your heat pump may be underperforming due to low refrigerant, component failure, or being undersized. This dramatically increases energy costs.
How often should heat pumps be serviced?
We recommend twice-yearly maintenance—before heating season and before cooling season—because heat pumps run year-round. Regular maintenance prevents breakdowns and maintains efficiency.
Heat Pump Repair Maintenance Tips
- Schedule professional maintenance twice yearly (spring and fall)
- Keep outdoor unit clear of snow, ice, leaves, and debris
- Change or clean filters monthly during heavy use periods
- Monitor for ice buildup beyond normal defrost cycles
- Ensure nothing blocks airflow around indoor and outdoor units
- Address unusual sounds or performance changes promptly
